چکیده

We derive constraints which must be satisfied by the sources of ∼ 1015 to ∼ 1018 eV cosmic rays, under the assumption that the sources are Galactic. We show that while these constraints are not satisfied by ordinary supernovae, which are believed to be the sources of . 1015 eV cosmic rays, they may be satisfied by the recently discovered class of trans-relativistic supernovae (TRSNe), supernovae associated with sub-energetic gammaray bursts. A crucial TRSN characteristic, which distinguishes them from ordinary supernovae and allows them to satisfy the derived constraints, is the deposition of a significant fraction, > 10−2, of the explosion energy in mildly relativistic, γβ > 1, ejecta. Galactic TRSNe may therefore be the sources of cosmic rays with energies up to ∼ 1018 eV. Maximum Particle Energies by Fermi Acceleration and the Origin of Cosmic Rays above the Knee

We derive the maximum accelerated particle energy from first-order and second-order Fermi acceleration at nonrelativistic and relativistic shocks for explosions taking place in a uniform surrounding medium. Second-order stochastic processes in relativistic flows are shown to be capable of accelerating cosmic rays to ultra-high energies. Cosmic rays above the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum can ...

Constraints on Jets and Luminosity Function of Gamma-ray Bursts Associated with Supernovae

If Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are generally associated with supernovae like 1998bw, a relatively wide intrinsic luminosity function is implied, which indicates the existence of a large amount of undetected dim bursts, and a much higher event-rate than is often assumed. If it is assumed that the intrinsic luminosity function of GRBs is a power-law: φ(L) ∝ L (β > 0, Lmin ≤ L ≤ Lmax), data from the B...

Secondary Photons from High-energy Protons Accelerated in Hypernovae

Recent observations show that hypernovae may deposit some fraction of their kinetic energy in mildly relativistic ejecta. In the dissipation process of such ejecta in a stellar wind, cosmic ray protons can be accelerated up to ∼ 10 eV. We discuss the TeV to MeV gamma-ray and the X-ray photon signatures of cosmic rays accelerated in hypernovae. Secondary X-ray photons, emitted by electron-positr...

Diffusive Shock Acceleration in Unmodified Relativistic, Oblique Shocks

We present results from a fully relativistic Monte Carlo simulation of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) in unmodified shocks. The computer code uses a single algorithmic sequence to smoothly span the range from nonrelativistic speeds to fully relativistic shocks of arbitrary obliquity, providing a powerful consistency check. While known results are obtained for nonrelativistic and ultra-relat...

Radiation Hazard of Relativistic Interstellar Flight

From the point of view of radiation safety, interstellar space is not empty. Neutral and ionized interstellar gas and cosmic rays consisting of H and He-nucleons constitute radiation hazard aboard relativistic interstellar ships. Relativistic aberration of cosmic rays is evaluated and radiation doses from oncoming relativistic flow of interstellar gas and cosmic rays are estimated. Necessary sh...
